On Friday 28th November 2003 the first Airbus A320 owned by Niki Lauda’s new airline took off for Tenerife from Vienna. Niki Lauda had taken over the Austrian subsidiary of “Aero Lloyd Austria”, a company that had gone into receivership. His declared aim was to set up a new low-cost carrier in addition to operating a charter business.
At the start of 2004 NIKI took a powerful partner on board: Air Berlin, Germany’s second largest airline has been a successful player in the low-cost sector for some years. Since then Air Berlin has a 24 per cent share in “NIKI”. At the same time Air Berlin took over flight and crew planning, sales guidance and PR work as service provider for NIKI. The flight operations, ground services, technical support, controlling, marketing and tour operator sales departments are based in Austria. The aim of this alliance is to open up new markets and jointly to succeed in the market.
Yet despite the low airfares, NIKI passengers will not have to compromise on service, catering as well as magazines and newspapers are available free of charge on NIKI flights.
