Spanair S.A., was founded in December of 1986 by SAS and the Spanish company Teinver. Flight operations began at the end of March 1988 and since then almost 87* million passengers have flown with Spanair. At the beginning of its airline activity, Spanair operations comprised international charter flights, transporting tourists to Spain from over 100 European airports.
In 1997 Spanair began their first regular intercontinental market flight operations, in November of that year with flights between Madrid and the international airport of Washington-Dulles. More routes soon followed which includes flights from Madrid to Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and La Habana. The company currently continues to offer intercontinental routes code sharing with other prestigious airlines which have led to a code share agreement.
Since 01 April 2003, Spanair became a full member of the Star Alliance network, the largest and most successful airline alliance worldwide.
