Costa Rica & Panama
Cahuita 11 day tour - Costa Rica as featured on Getaway tonight:

Costa Rica is regarded by many to be the most ecologically responsible country in the world, with over a quarter of its territory being managed as national park or as a reserve. Wildlife enthusiasts will adore this small country and birdwatchers in particular are in for a real treat with over 850 exotic species to track down – the most famous being the unbelievably beautiful Resplendent Quetzal, with its iridescent plumage that gleams emerald green or shines like polished metal.

You will start your tour of Costa Rica and Panama at San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital and cultural centre. After a night in San Jose you will head straight for the Caribbean coast where you will overnight in the laid-back port of Limon. Limon is the gateway to the stunning Tortuguero National Park; one of the most varied parks in the country with 11 ecological habitats, ranging from high rainforest to herbaceous marsh communities and fronting the sea with a seemingly endless expanse of beach. Tortuguero shelters a fabulous array of wildlife, including more than 300 bird species, among them the great green macaw; three species of marine turtles; 60 mammal species, including 13 of Costa Rica's 16 endangered species, including jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, cougars, river otters, and manatees. After a stay in the national park you will head for the chilled-out beach town of Cahuita, where you can relax on the white Caribbean sand and in the evening grab a rum and Samba in one of the local bars. Visit neighbouring Puerto Viejo a village also blessed with great Caribbean culture, stunning beaches, surfing and beautiful walks through coastal rainforests.

On day six say goodbye to Costa Rica and head over the border to the magical Bocas del Toro in Panama. This archipelago has the perfect combination of nature and historical and cultural traditions, with a good variety of aquatic species, coral reefs, mangroves, tropical forest, beaches with crystal clear water, undisturbed jungles with all the flora and fauna you can imagine. The islands of Bocas del Torro were deemed so idyllic that “Survivor” was filmed on one of them. After a few days exploring the islands you will then transfer to the Chiriqui highlands and the mountain resort town of Boquete. For the more adventurous traveller Boquete offers white water rafting and horse riding, for the more leisurely explorer there are treks and walks galore and for the down-right lazy there are lovely little restaurants to hang out in where they serve delicious, freshly caught trout and superb hot chocolates. Your final day of the tour (day eleven) is spent travelling back to San Jose.
