Start your Imaginative Traveller "Mayan Explorer" journey in the Mayan heartland of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. It is here that the amazing Tulum "Fortress" is to be found. This is the only Mayan temple to exist on a seashore and what a beautiful location it is as well sitting on a picture perfect beach surrounded by blue skies. Then, departing Mexico for Belize, you enter the tropical world of dense jungles and the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Spend your time on Caye Caulker, an idyllic island fringed with palm trees, where you will spend three days relaxing, snorkelling and taking boat trips out to see the endangered manatee. It's then in to the jungle on the mainland and a visit to San Ignacio, a small town situated within the Belize rainforest, where you'll stay in simple jungle huts. San Ignacio is a great base for exploring the surrounding area there are plenty of options to choose from, including horse riding, jungle trekking, caving, canoeing and visiting some of the excellent Mayan sites in the area, such as Caracol.

Depart Belize for the traditional Mayan lands of Guatemala, visit Flores, a pleasant island town on Lake Peten Itza in Guatemala and then embark on a trek into the thick jungle of the Peten region, spending nights camping near little-visited Mayan ruins and looking for some of the area's superb wildlife. The highlight of the area is a full day to visit Tikal, perhaps the most impressive of all the Mayan sites and set amidst imposing jungle that resounds with the calls of monkeys and exotic birds. After a visit to the dense forest it's then off to the Rio Dulce where you board a boat and sail to Livingston, a fun and lively town which is home to Guatemala’s Garifuna population (ancestors of freed or escaped slaves). After partying in Livingston it's off to probably the most beautiful city in the whole of Central America, Antigua. Surrounded by volcanoes and full of delightful colonial architecture, Antigua is a delight to explore and, for the energetic, try a hike up one of the nearby "active" volcanoes for fantastic views over the city.

Qantas Media Release -

SPECIAL AVIATION SECURITY MEASURES FOR AIR TRAVEL FROM UNITED KINGDOM

SYDNEY, 10 August 2006: Qantas said today that it would comply with new, temporary security measures introduced by the UK Government for flights departing from and transiting through the United Kingdom.

The new measures, which apply to all airlines operating from the United Kingdom, restrict the items that passengers can carry onto an aircraft as hand baggage (see below).

Qantas has begun contacting customers likely to be affected by the new security measures in Australia, its Asian hubs and in the UK and Europe. These additional security requirements do not affect Qantas domestic and other international operations. Qantas operates four services each day from London Heathrow, and also carries passengers from Australia and Asia into Heathrow for onward travel.

As a result of the changes, Qantas customers travelling on flights from and to the UK are asked to allow additional time for check-in. Further information for Qantas customers will be available on qantas.com.

ADVICE RECEIVED FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM, DEPARTMENT FOR TRANSPORT

With immediate effect, the following arrangements apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and those transferring between flights at a UK airport.

All cabin baggage will be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports.

Passengers will be allowed to take through the airport security search point, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag, only the following items. Nothing may be carried in pockets:

• pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (eg money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags))
• travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets)
• prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (eg diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic
• spectacles and sunglasses, without cases
• contact lens holders, without bottles of solution
• for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags)
• female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes)
• tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
• keys (but no electrical key fobs)

All passengers will be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are
carrying will be x-ray screened.

Pushchairs and walking aids will be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs will be allowed to pass through the screening point.

In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, will be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered will be removed from the passenger.

Passengers should be encouraged to configure their baggage in line with the above requirements before arriving at the airport, and to allow plenty of time to pass through airport security screening.
