DISCOVER JAPAN – 10days
Your first few days are spent in the bustling, technological city of Tokyo, home to more than eight million people. After your orientation day, Day 2 takes you on a tour to the MEIJI SHRINE, then onto see the Imperial Palace Plaza, and a spot of shopping in at the NAKAMISE SHOPPING ARCADE. Day 3 is yours to explore Tokyo independently, such as the famous area of Ginza. You may wish to join a full-day optional excursion to Kamakura, home of the 750-year-old Great Buddha, followed by a scenic drive and a cable-car ride for panoramic views of Mt. Fuji. The optional tour concludes with a bullet train ride back to Tokyo.

From Tokyo, you’ll head to Matsumoto, gateway to the Japanese Alps, known as "the roof of Japan." Visit the famous MATSUMOTO CASTLE dating back to 1593. You then travel through the rugged Alps, to the quiet, isolated town of Takayama, where old traditions continue to this day, and the town appears to be relatively untouched by time.

The next morning begins with a visit to the market, where you’ll find locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers. It is then on to the San-Machi Suji historic district, famous for sake distilleries and tiny lacquer ware shops. Visit the KUSAKABE HERITAGE HOUSE for a glimpse of traditional Japanese architecture of the late 19th century. In the afternoon, a short ride brings you to the HIDA MINZOKU-MURA FOLK VILLAGE, a collection of traditional buildings.

The following day you continue driving through the mountainous Shokawa Valley to Shirakawa. This remote region of Japan is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to the unique GASSHO-ZUKURI (joined hands) - style thatched houses unique to this area. Continue to the scenic town of Kanazawa, situated between the mountains and the Sea of Japan and once the country's richest region.

Today your Tour leads you on a tour of one of Japan’s greatest gardens, KENROKU-EN, the "Garden of Six Qualities", dating from the 1670’s. In the afternoon, you travel along the Sea of Japan to Fushimi for a visit to the FUSHIMI INARI SHRINE, renowned for the thousands of brightly coloured Torii Gates. Here you will witness an exclusive performance of Miko (Shinto girls), before continuing on to Kyoto.

This morning's city tour of the historical city of Kyoto features the extraordinary NIJO CASTLE and the Old Imperial Palace, dating back to 1855 when Kyoto was the capital, and then onto visit the TEMPLE OF THE GOLD PAVILION. The evening offers join the optional outing to Gion Corner to see demonstrations of traditional Japanese arts, tea ceremony, flower arranging, Bunraku (puppet show), and a dance performance with traditional music.

From Kyoto you travel onto Osaka. The morning is at leisure for independent activities. A short orientation tour of Osaka, including a stop at the OSAKA CASTLE, is en route to the airport for your homebound flight.
