Let the exploring begin…
Shanghai: one of the most popular and exciting cities in
the world today epitomizes modern, urban China. Its
history is one of its most intriguing features, in
particular the 1930s and 40s where Shanghai was a
paradise for adventurers, tycoons, millionaires,
knights-errant and great beauties who came to this
attractive city to realise their dreams and countless
moving stories, both sad and joyful, were played out
here. This past has left Shanghai with a legacy of
interesting sites to explore; Yuyuan Garden, a
well-restored Suzhou-style garden created during the
Ming Dynasty, Jade Buddha Temple, the most popular
Buddhist temple in Shanghai that draws both
worshippers and tourists and the enchanting old town of Zhouzhuang, with its beautiful building, bridges and
canals. Shanghai is also a great destination for
shoppers, and the best-known shopping street in China -
Nanjing Road - is located here.
After Shanghai take a short bus trip to Suzhou and then
a train to Nanjing, where you will see Xuanwu Lake and
the Ming city walls. The following morning and you're off
on your flight to Yichang where in the afternoon you
will take a nice hike to stretch those legs. From there
you will travel to the world-famous Three Gorges, which
extends 193 kilometres along the Yangtze River and is
one of China's finest areas of scenery and cultural
history. After a hike through the gorge followed by an
enriching home stay with the locals next to the “Goddess
Peak”, you will continue hiking through the gorge. After
your hike take a boat back to Wushan and connect with
your fast ferry to the upper end of the Yangste
Reservoir Project to the greatest engineering project in
the world at present - the Three Gorges Dam Project. The
Three Gorges Dam will be the largest hydropower station
and dam in the world, with a 1.2 mile stretch of
concrete and a 370 mile-long reservoir and 525 feet
deep. Astoundingly this project will cost more than
virtually any other single construction project in
history.
Your next stop on the tour is the town of temples and
teahouses, Chengdu, where you can spend the afternoon
snooping around these architectural treasures. In the
morning you will meet the pandas of Chengdu, always a
guaranteed crowd pleaser, in the afternoon you’re off to
Xichang and a full day cultural excursion to the
neighbouring local villages. On the following day you
will travel overland to Lugu Lake where you will stay in
a small Musuo minority village. Strap on your life vest
as you're going in a local's boat called a “pig trough”
across the Lugu Lake, where you will stop enroute to
visit an island temple. Then after enjoying lunch you
will take the bus to Lijang and spend the rest of the
day exploring the Naxi minority village. The next day
you will spend mixing with the locals of Qiaotou which
is the start of the beautiful Tiger Leaping Gorge hike,
that evening spend the night in a local village before
heading off the next day to continue the hike. Wake up
in the morning then take a bus to Dali. Sit back and
relax in the hippy Dali with a full day to yourself,
maybe check out Erhai Lake and some local villages?
After a day of reflection you are off to Kunming the
capital of Yunnan Province where you can explore at your
heart's content. The tour ends here in Kunming.
