flora, fauna, coral reefs and forests. If you are
looking for a bit of a challenge and an adventure and
also a little bit of relaxation then this is the tour
for you.
Your first day after arriving into Kota Kinabalu is
a free day for you to explore Kota Kinabalu. Kota
Kinabalu has a unique blend of European, Malay, Filipino
and Chinese Cultures. It's located on the edge on the
South China Sea and overlooks a beautiful cluster of
coral fringed islands. It's located against a backdrop of
the Croker Range with the granite peaks of Mr Kinabalu
in the distance. Today you can choose to visit the Sabah
Museum, the State Mosque, take a walk up Signal Hill or
visit local markets and shops.
The following morning you will take a morning flight
to Sandakan, upon arrival you will drive to the nearby
Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre. This is only
one of four Orang-utan sanctuaries in the world, it was
established in 1964 and covers 4000 hectares. Viewing
these apes swinging in the trees especially around
feeding times is a great experience. You will then
travel by bus and boat to a jungle lodge at Kinbatangan
River. Kinbatangan is Sabah's longest river and one of
the best places in South East Asia to observe wildlife.
The Jungle Lodge is the perfect base from which to
observe the astonishing variety of wildlife in the area
- definitely a nature lovers paradise! The river is
surrounded by tranquil rainforest, which is home to the
unique proboscis and leaf monkeys as well as Orang-utan
and macaques. Giant squirrels, marbled cats and
elephants are also present but rarely see. You will also
enjoy a sunset boat ride along the river.
Returning to Sandakan then travelling to Kinabalu
National Park where you will have an opportunity for an
excursion to a tea plantation. On the 6th day you will
have the opportunity to take an excursion to the Poring
Hot Springs. It is definitely recommended as the water
is said to heal and definitely relaxes you before the
climb tomorrow. You can also take a walk along a tree
top canopy walkway or go to the butterfly farm.
Finally here is the day you have been waiting for -
climbing Mount Kinabalu standing at 4101 metres high and
the highest mountain in South East Asia. This is a tough
and challenging climb but very rewarding. Our base camp
tonight is approximately a 6 hour walk and you can take
your time enjoying the scenery and the diverse array of
plant life. This is also where the Rafflesia the largest
flower in the world can be found if you are lucky. You
camp up here tonight to be woken up bright eyed and
bushy tailed at 2.30 am as you all attempt to hit the
summit before sunrise. This is extremely tiring and
tough as you are in high attitudes however if you reach
the summit to see the sunrise it will be one of the best
views you will ever experience. It is truly breath
taking as you view the jungles of Sabah on one side and
the South China Sea on the other. After that you climb
down to base camp for breakfast before heading down to
the base of the mountain.
Waking up on the 9th morning aching from the climb
but satisfied that you made it you will return to Kota
Kinabalu to explore the city at your leisure there are
some excellent optional excursions such as white water
rafting on the Padas River or you can visit Manukan
Island in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. Day 10 the
trip comes to an end.
