British Heritage from $2159

Preserving the past is arguably one of the things that the English do best and nowhere is there a more authentic illustration of England’s past than at the York Castle Museum. George the VI, King of Britain from 1936-1952 is quoted as saying “the history of York is the history of England”. He may be right. The York Castle Museum captures the past 400 years of England’s history like no other. Visitors can wander through cobbled streets and peruse buildings housing a variety of antiquities from leeches preserved in glasses at an apothecary's shop [a would be doctor cross medicine man], a toy shop, a gentlemen's outfitters and, of course, a Victorian sweet shop.

The jewel in the crown of York Castle Museum is Kirkgate, a recreated Victorian street, complete with a Hansom cab and a stage coach. Originally designed by Dr. J.L. Kirk, the founder of the museum, visitors are transported to another age with gas street lighting, cobbles, a mounting block and rows of shop windows wonderfully preserved and all original to the period. The York Castle Museum is an included visit at no additional cost on the Globus 10 day ‘British Heritage’ first class tour priced from $2,349*. Guests will spend 2 nights in York as well as two or three night stays in Edinburgh, Ruthin and Bristol.
