New BA/QF to UK & Europe + Sale still on Norfolk & Pacific Islands + Domesic Sale

Welcome to another edition of the most packed out travel newsletter in the country.

What a big night for the Australian and Croatian football teams, and don’t forget the other six teams playing tonight as well - lets hope for a feast of the beautiful game!

We did have a chuckle in Best Flights this week, after seeing a couple of on-line competitors' embarrassing marketing bloopers in relation to the World Cup: one calling a particular team “boring” and one encouraging kicking the opposing team off the field! I am pleased to say that at Best Flights we are a little more cosmopolitan and open-minded than that and realise that Australians (our customers) come from all four corners of the globe, and our outlook on the World Cup - and life in general in fact - is not quite as insular as our competitors seem to be! Having said that, lets hope the Gold and Green get that elusive point!

OK, back to business and what a great week it has been with our two massive sales which are still going on, if you have not seen them yet, then you better have a sneak now before it is too late.

SKI - NZ - NOW !!!!!!

As more New Zealand ski areas open for the season, many are reporting the best start to the season in a decade. A series of cold southerly storms laden with snow have passed through ski areas over the past six weeks contributing to near perfect conditions for skiers and riders.

Mt Ruapehu opened its beginners’ area on Friday (16th June) and the ski area is looking to progressively open other facilities over the next few days. However opening efforts have been pleasantly hampered by more snow falls. A storm passed through yesterday but has cleared today. The Happy Valley area of Whakapapa is open – once staff dig their way to the lift areas!

Whakapapa advises there is a 90 cm base on the upper part of the mountain and Turoa ski area reports 120cm.

The South Island’s Mt Hutt ski area is reporting the best skiing and riding conditions in June for a decade. There is top to bottom skiing in the basin, including the lower Triple Chair area. The average base is 75cm.

Coronet Peak opened last Thursday (15th June). According to ski area manager, Duncan Smith, “It’s been a great lead up to the season and fantastic to get the boards on for a run or three. The snow guns are blowing, there are heaps of trails open and the forecast is for more snow. We’re happy with that”.

Cardrona ski area, near Wanaka is on target to open on Friday (23th June). “The mountain is looking amazing, from top to bottom, with over a metre on the high groomed trails and 30 cm at the bottom of the Whitestar”, says marketing manager, Bruce McGechan. “Plus if you’re planning to explore off-trail there are pockets of powder about 1.5 metres deep with the natural snow quality being superb”.

At Queenstown the Remarkables ski area is set to open on Saturday (24th June). “The atmosphere over the last few days of staff training has been superb. Everyone is excited about opening and getting on their skis or boards to enjoy the conditions,” said Hamish McCrostie, The Remarkables ski area manager.

Treble Cone is expecting their first runs on Tuesday (27th June).

The strong start to the season is great news for the organizers of the Lindauer Queenstown Winter Festival. The event is poised to start on Friday (23 June).

Winners announced at the World Airline Awards

The results are in from the annual World Airline Survey conducted by Skytrax. Measuring over 35 aspects of passenger satisfaction, the survey also takes into consideration each airline’s product and service standards.

British Airways has topped the poll, winning the 2006 Airline of the Year award. Coming in at second and third place were Qantas and Cathay Pacific, respectively. Airlines that have improved their ranking from 2005 include Japan’s ANA and Qatar Airways, which has moved two places this year to be ranked in at 6th position.

CEO of Skytrax Edward Plaisted commented of this year’s World Airline Awards stating “The World Airline Survey is recognised across the globe as the leading independent monitor of passenger opinions - the survey process offering the only truly worldwide project, with open and uninfluenced results. The final total of 13.61 million eligible, completed survey interviews was beyond our expectations, and we extend a very big thank you to all those customers who participated.”

Regional awards were also presented with Virgin Blue winning Best Low-Cost Airline and Qantas picking up two awards, winning Best Regional Airline in the Asia Pacific region and Best Airline in Australasia.
