Why not step out of your comfort zone, of your usual
package holiday, and head to Peru for 2 weeks to visit
the magical Inca highlands, and the coastal desert
civilisations of ancient Peru.
Your tour starts in Lima, the capital city of Peru, with
a free day in to explore the city. See the colonial
architecture and soak up the atmosphere of the cities
two main squares, Plaza De Armas and Plaza San Martin.
On Day 2, we take a domestic flight to Juliaca and onto
Puno, on the shores of the famous Lake Titicaca, the
highest navigable lake in the world. Off shore we visit
the island homes of the native Indians, on their
floating reed islands, and experience travelling in a
traditional reed boat on the lake. Before leaving the
shores of Lake Titicaca, we visit the ruins of the
ancient burial chambers of Sillustani, before heading
north towards the ancient Inca capital, Cuzco.
Your drive north takes you through the beautiful scenery
of the La Raya Pass past snow-capped mountains and hot,
mineral pools. On arrival into Casco, a full day is
spent visiting the Sacred Valley of the Inca’s, the
local Indian markets and the magnificent temple fortress
of Ollantaytambo, built on the valley’s mountainside.
Day 6 sees an early-rise for the train to the quaint
town of Aguas Calientes, at the foot of the lost city of
Machu Pichu. This magical city is nestled at the top of
the mountain, and has survived the times and is still
relatively intact due to its isolation, and was only
discovered by the outside world in 1911. You have plenty
of time to explore and enjoy this mystical site before
heading back down to Cuzco at the end of the day.
Back in Cuzco you have 2 full free days to explore the
colonial buildings and beautiful churches, and the wader
the narrow streets with remnants of Inca walls and
archways still abundant. There are several fantastic
Inca sites nearby to Cuzco for you to investigate should
you feel like getting out of the city itself.
Overlooking the city is the ceremonial site of
Sacsayhuaman where you will find the largest Inca
stonework examples.
After our free days in Cuzco it is time to head off
through the Andes, towards our destination of Nazca, an
oasis town famous for its mysterious etchings in the
desert floor. You can take an optional flight over these
amazing images, to capture their true size and accuracy
of their geometrical lines. You also have the
opportunity to visit the underground aqua ducts and the
extraordinary Chauchilla Cemetry to see the ice mummies
that still their skin and hair intact!
From Nazca you head deep into the Peruvian desert to
Huacachina and the enormous sand dunes where you try
your hand at sand boarding if you are feeling
adventurous. Then off to the Pacific coast to the town
of Pisco, to try the national drink Pisco Sour. From
Pisco we take to the sea by boat to the Ballestas
Islands, a wildlife sanctuary full of sea lions and
numerous species of birds. Looking back at the mainland
we can see the Candelabra, another famous large etching
linked to Nazca lines and civilisation. It is then only
a short drive back to Lima where your adventures in Peru
comes to an end.
